Dr. James W. Lewis
Senior Pastor
Rev. Dr. James W. Lewis, Senior Pastor of The Park, is a disciple of Jesus Christ. He is a native of Houston, Texas, and is the second of ten children born to his faithful and loving parents, Rev. John J.R. and Betty Joyce Lewis –both deceased. He grew up in Acres Homes and graduated from George Washington Carver Jr.-Sr. High School in 1968. For over forty-four (44) years, he was married to the love of his life, the late Barbara Kaye Lewis (deceased March 13, 2017). God blessed them with two daughters, Andrea Nicole [husband, Jayson] and Kimberli Chantrelle [husband, George]. Two beautiful granddaughters, Ameris Joy and Nya Simone, also continue to bring great joy to him.
After graduating from high school, James Lewis received his B.S. degree in Mathematics and M.B.A. in Finance from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. While working for a public accounting firm in Houston, he earned the designation of Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A. –no longer in service) in 1976. As his journey continued, he acknowledged God’s call on his life to the professional ministry in 1980 at South Park Church of God, Houston, Texas, under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Carl T. Crawford. To further equip himself for service to the church and the kingdom, he did M.Div. studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas (1982-1986). In 1986 he began doctoral studies in Theology and Ethics at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. While there, he also was ordained in the Church of God (Anderson, IN.) and served for over five years as Pastor of The First Church of God, Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1994, he received his Ph.D. degree in Theology and Ethics from Duke University.
Pastor James Lewis began his twenty-four (24)-year teaching career in 1992 at Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana. He is now Dean Emeritus of the Anderson University School of Theology and Christian Ministry. Since April 9, 2017, he currently serves as the Senior Pastor of the South Park Church of God, “The Park,” in southeast Houston. He and the congregation are excited in this new season of ministry.
Pastor Lewis continues to enjoy an extensive and varied ministry of preaching, teaching, and workshop leadership. He loves to be with his family, and also enjoys reading, walking, traveling, and watching sports. His greatest desire is to love God more perfectly, to live in the world more faithfully, and to equip and encourage God’s people more passionately. He feels especially called to sharing the Good News of the gospel of Jesus Christ to a hurting and divided world.
